The origin of Schlessman Seed Company began in 1915 when John Schlessman started to grow seed for local farmers. Eventually, his four sons joined him. In 1957 John incorporated the business as J. Schlessman & Sons, Inc. The business grew to the point where entire railroad box cars were being loaded with Schlessman's seed for distribution around the country.
In 1969 the name of the company was changed from J. Schlessman & Sons, Inc. to Schlessman Seed Company. It is an Ohio corporation but still a family owned business. Schlessman's is located in north central Ohio and is in one of the finest growing areas in the world. Schlessman Seed Company produces popcorn seed for commercial processors all over the world as well as hybrid seed corn, sweet corn, soybeans, oats and wheat seed.
Technology and new product development will play a major role in the future. Schlessman Seed Company is on the leading edge of research and development. We retain a full time popcorn plant breeder with four research stations in Ames, Iowa; Nampa, Idaho; Ponce, Puerto Rico; and here in Milan, Ohio. Schlessman Seed Company is continually working to increase yields and expansion of our popcorn varieties.
Schlessman Seed Company has agreements with many companies who are advancing genetically transferred traits to produce new genetically enhanced hybrids. This new seed enables farmers to grow relatively weed-free and insect-free crops, thereby improving their yields while increasing efficiency and improving the environment.
While many of the products of Schlessman Seed Company go to other seed companies and dealers for distribution, Schlessman's still sells its very popular popping corn and sweet corn to local area residents.
